Introduction to Decision Making Problems
Hasan Yahya, Ph.D
There is no small or large organization may continue without the process of decision making. The success of an organization, however, is dependent on the accuracy of the decisions made for that organization. The term decision conveys a note of finality more clearly indicated by the objective decisive. In this case avoiding a decision can be decisive, for it is a decision not to alter or even enter in into an issue of current concern. Decisions for example, in higher education such as universities are seldom decisive, either in time or application. Because of changing circumstances such as, student enrollment, or number of old and new courses. Decisions on rules, regulations, and policies never altered or revoked.
A review of them usually brings out inconsistencies, ambiguity and may be contradictions in some areas which implies modification and evaluation from time to time. Pressures of need rather than examination of the basic values, considerations, and context that originally engendered the previous decisions. Since these pressures may, also have originated from administrative pressures as well, operative values, considerations and context may not be determined.
Meeting minutes and records generally do not well reflect the underlying rational for actions taken and policies decided for several reasons, perhaps achieving a decision needs compromises but not ready explained or phrase-able in words entirely acceptable to parties concerned.
Some types of decisions facing an administrator or manager may clarify the nature of decisions process. Here we discuss some of the most distinctive problems of decision making. The five problems described here are: routine, innovation, the institutional mission, monitoring and finally the problem of personal policies. In the next article we will discuss these problems.
